The 16-year-old victim was rushed to hospital and she is in a stable condition.

Police were called to a street in the Silesian city after a man wandering about with axe was spotted by members of the public.

The man apparently lashed out at a policeman after officers asked him to lay down the axe, shortly after midnight.

The officer in question then opened fire, accdidentally injuring the teenager who was near the man.

She was hit in her left calf.

Police have not commented on whether the axe-wielding man was under the influence of alcohol or other substances, and no motive has been given for why the 19-year-old was carrying the weapon. (nh)
