"The introduction of modernised banknotes into circulation is smooth and is not causing problems,” central bank chief Marek Belka said in a statement.
According to the NBP, the level of counterfeiting in Poland is low – six or seven in every million banknotes in circulation is a forgery.
But the central bank says that technological progress in recent years meant that security features on notes needed to be upgraded.
The central bank is also working on a new PLN 500 banknote, to be introduced next year at the earliest. (pk/rg)
