Polish man dead after being run over by police car

A 55-year-old man died on Sunday after being run over by a police car in the centre of Katowice, southern Poland.

The incident occurred at about 4 am. The police car apparently had its sirens blaring, after responding to a call.
“Initial findings indicate that the man stepped into a crossing while a red light was on, and he went staight into the bonnet of an oncoming police car,” commented Jacek Pytel, a spokesman for the Municipal Police Headquarters in Katowice.
The man was taken to hospital by ambulance but medics were unable to save him.
It has been reported that the man was under the influence of alcohol. A local prosecutor's office is investigating the accident, together with the police. (nh)
