In a spectacular celebration of the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland, bonfires will be lit around the country on Thursday evening, from the Tatra Mountains in the south to the Hel Peninsula on the Baltic coast.

The initiative will begin on Mount Giewont in southern Poland in a symbolic fashion as bonfires are not permitted there for ecological reasons. Torches will be used to illuminate a historic cross on top of the mountains.

Soon afterwards bonfires will be fit in other parts of Poland, according to a detailed schedule.

The initiative is being organised by the Polish Highlanders Union and the Voluntary Fire Service. There are over 16,000 voluntary fire services in Poland.

According to their spokesperson, the response to the initiative has been good and it is expected that most of the services will take part.

In Warsaw itself, four bonfires will be lit to celebrate the anniversary of Christianity in Poland and the foundation of Polish statehood. (mk/pk)
