The hospital where the man was transported to informed us [about the incident], commented Lucyna Rekowska, spokesperson for the Gdańsk police.

We have listened to witnesses of the incident, and we have secured surveillance footage."

The local prosecutor's office has been informed.

Reportedly, surveillance footage shows a man walking near a nightclub in central Gdańsk. He is approached by another man who deals him a blow to the head.

The 40-year-old apparently fell to the floor, knocking his head on the ground. He was later found by staff working at the nightclub after they closed the venue.

Police and hospital staff have declined to provide further details at present. Local press were told unofficially that the man is an Egyptian citizen.

The investigation is ongoing. In March, Poland's Human Rights Ombudsman Adam Bodnar declared that there has been an upsurge in beatings of foreign citizens in recent months. (nh/pk)
