Samuel N. (surname withheld under Polish privacy laws) attacked a ten-year-old girl in the town as she emerged from a bookshop with her parents on 19 August 2015.

He then dropped the axe and tried to flee, but he was stopped by bystanders.

During the investigation it emerged that the then 27-year-old had been out of work for about two months.

The day before the murder he had received a letter from the District Labour Office in Kamienna Góra informing him that he was not entitled to unemployment benefits.

Allegedly he had intended to vent his anger on staff at the District Labour Office.

Besides being sentenced to 25 years in prison, Samuel N. has also been ordered to pay compensation to the child's parents to the sum of PLN 200,000 (about EUR 45,500). (nh/pk)
