While visiting the city of Bystrzyca Kłodzka in southern Poland on Thursday, President Duda said that some of the poorer parts of the country were particularly hard hit by the economic changes following the fall of Communism in 1989.

He added that despite the efforts of local authorities, they are not able to increase the quality of life of its residents.

“These changes must therefore be carried out by government programmes to support the developmental potential of citizens,” President Duda said.

Duda said that the 500+ government handout programme to Polish families will go a long way to improve this situation.

“The state supports families and ultimately supports the economy. Most of this money will go to regions which have often been neglected until now, where there was no infrastructure investments, and where, therefore, it is harder to develop entrepreneurs,” Duda added.

"Neither the government, nor I, will withdraw from our commitments,” the president said, referring to his election pledges to lower the retirement age and increasing the tax-free bracket for Poles. (rg)
