His son Jaroslaw, also a politician, confirmed that the former freedom fighter has a high fever.
Walesa's health has been a matter of grave concern for his family for some years now. In late 2007, the former president announced that he was in line to have a heart transplant.
Early the following year, surgeons in Houston, US, fitted the Solidarity legend with a pacemaker, as an alternative measure.
Nevertheless, Walesa's heart problems mean that any infection is potential threat.
“Doctors are trying to eliminate the temperature, and make a diagnosis,” said MP Jerzy Borowczak, a close friend of the former president, in an interview with the TVN television station.
“Everything is alright with his heart,” Borowczak added.
At present, it is unclear how long Walesa will have to remain in hospital. (nh)
