Parliamentarians have rejected a Senate amendment to a bill that would disallow a person of homosexual orientation becoming a foster parent.

The ruling Civic Platform (PO), their junior coalition partners the Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL) and the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) all voted for the rejection of the amendment, with the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) voting for the amendment.

Before the voting in the Sejm lower parliamentary house took place there a was a heated discussion on the motion, with PiS politician Beata Mazurek accusing the government of not protecting children and the family as well as avoiding their consitutional duty.

Meanwhile, Zdzislawa Janowska from SLD blasted the Senate amendment as being ‘odd’, asking whether “every single [person] wanting to become a foster parent will have to show papers proving that they are not homosexual.”

The bill on family support and foster care is set to reform the surrogate care system in Poland by gradually decreasing the number of care centres. Only a handful of small orphanages are to remain open for children with special needs.

The bill also regulates the conditions under which children may be cared for by state institutions free of charge. (jb)
