The majority of smokers were found to be male and aged between 45 and 54. In the 34-44 age bracket there is some gender parity between smokers, with 34 percent of women and 32 percent of men declaring that they smoke.

In the CBOS survey, education was also found to play a large role in who smokes. 41 percent of respondents with vocational training smoke, compared to only 19 percent who had completed higher education.

Among smokers, 82 percent declared that they reach for a packet of cigarettes regularly, with only 18 percent stating that they only smoke occasionally.

One third of non-smokers were found to have smoked before, however.

Meanwhile, up to 94 percent of respondents were for a smoking ban in hospitals, public transport, cinemas and theatres, with 76 percent stating that smoking should be banned in airports, bus and railway stations, as well as at work, with 72 percent for such a solution.

The survey was carried out between 5-11 May on a representative selection of adult Poles numbering 1198 people. (jb)
