“Possible risks which were identified in preparations for the WYD have been averted for the time being,” said the director of the Government Security Centre (RCB), Marek Kubiak, following a meeting between state and church authorities.

In mid-March, the RCB voiced reservations about Brzegi, a site on the outskirts of Kraków, where a mass rounding off World Youth Day is to be held on July 31. The mass is expected to draw 1.5 to 1.8 million Catholics from around the world, as well as Pope Francis.

The RCB had highlighted an insufficient number of escape routes, a high-voltage cable placed next to the planned location of an altar, inadequate road infrastructure, as well as risks associated with damage or destruction of a nearby embankment.

World Youth Day, which runs from 25-31 July 2016, is expected to attract over two million people from around the world. The largest national groups will come from Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, the United States and Germany. (rg)
