The president said that "in the last several years the development of Poland has been focused on large cities.”

Speaking to the residents of Radzyń Podlaski in eastern Poland on Tuesday, Duda said that the point is not that "big cities have to suffer, or they should become worse.”

But he added: "Poland does not consist only of big cities”.

“I am delighted that these changes are happening, because it is to you and all Poles, and Polish families, that the 500+ programme is directed,” Duda said.

The Law and Justice (PiS) party which won the the October election has introduced a number of populist initiatives including the 500+ programme where Polish families will get a PLN 500 a month state payout for the second child onwards.

The government has also raised the minimum wage for casual and self-employed workers. (rg)
