Maciej Zięba is to collect the award in Wrocław, south-western Poland, on Friday.

He won the honour for his role in the democratic opposition during the communist era in Poland and for his part in the creation of the European Solidarity Center in the northern city of Gdańsk.

Other winners of the award this year are German politician Horst Teltschik, an advocate of Polish-German reconciliation, and the Syrian humanitarian organization White Helmets, which provides on-the-ground help in war zones in Syria.

In previous years, the Atlantic Council Freedom Award has gone to Tadeusz Mazowiecki, the first Polish prime minister in the post-communist era, and Poland’s Jerzy Buzek, a former president of the European Parliament.

Both were members of the Solidarity movement and the democratic opposition during the communist period. (tf/pk)
