The meeting is an extraordinary one for the Council, which usually meets on Tuesdays.

The agenda of the Council of Ministers included a planned discussion on "Information on the international aspects of the adoption by the United Kingdom, by way of a referendum, [and] the decision to withdraw from the European Union”.

This point of the agenda will be presented by the foreign minister.

In a referendum on Thursday, 51.9% of UK voters decided to leave the EU while 48.1% voted to stay, a result that dealt a body blow to the European Union and caused turmoil on global markets.

Poland will help propose reforms to the European Union, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said on Friday.

"The result of the British referendum is primarily a result of the crises which have been taking place in the EU for some time, and which have not been resolved," Szydło told a press conference.

"They could not be solved by European politicians, and were simply swept under the carpet."
