On Wednesday, the Polish government announced that the first and lowest threat alert level – ALFA – will be introduced in Warsaw from 0:00am on 7 July until 11:59pm on 10 July, due to the NATO summit taking place in the Polish capital on July 8-9.

“This is a general warning. After introducing the first threat level, public authorities will be obliged to carry out increased checks of public places and large population gatherings,” said government spokesman Rafał Bochenek.

Poland's anti-terror laws outline four threat levels to be introduced in case of a potential terrorist threat or incident: ALFA, BRAVO, CHARLIE and the highest – DELTA.

Poland has also temporarily restored border checks with its EU neighbours as well as at ports and airports and has temporarily suspended local border traffic with Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave and Ukraine. (mol/pk)
