By 6 pm CET firefighters had been called out 1,100 times nationwide, with most such calls received in the southwestern Lower Silesia and the central Wielkopolska provinces.

The emergencies most often involved “pumping floodwater out of cellars and removing knocked down trees,” Paweł Frątczak, a spokesman for the Polish fire brigade headquarters, told the PAP news agency.

Ten households were flooded in the village of Sobin in southwest Poland after rain swelled a local river.

Poland’s Institute of Meteorology and Water Management announced a second-degree warning of heavy rain in Poland, the second-highest in the country’s scale, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday two Warsaw metro stations, numerous streets and two major healthcare facilities were flooded after downpours. (aba/pk)
