Andrzej N. was sentenced to 4 years and Jolanta S. (names withheld under Polish privacy laws) to 2.5 years in prison. They were accused of unwittingly causing a rail disaster.

On 3 March 2012, the two controllers unwittingly cleared two trains to run on a single track – one of them northbound, travelling from Przemyśl to Warsaw and the other southbound, on a journey from Warsaw to Kraków.

A collision that followed claimed the lives of 16 people and left over 150 injured.

The court in Częstochowa, southern Poland, also banned the two traffic controllers from performing their duties for a period of ten years.

The sentence is subject to appeal. (aba/pk)
