Several days of torrential rain in the High Tatras and the Tatra foothills region of southern Poland have made many local roads impassable and turned mountain trails into fast flowing rivers.

The management of the Tatra National Park has issued a warning to tourists in and around the resort of Zakopane not to venture even into the lower parts of the mountains, where paths are muddy and slippery.

Some of the trails have been closed, including those around Morskie Oko Lake, which are among the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Alert levels at several local rivers have been exceeded. Firefighters have been kept busy pumping out flooded cellars and basements.

The Tatra region attracts hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers at this time of the year. (mk/pk)
