World Youth Days 2016, organized by the Roman Catholic Church, will take place in Kraków from 25 to 31 July.

Radosław Włoszek, director of Kraków Airport, said that the airport is expecting 30,000 pilgrims to fly in to the city.

“We are able to calmly and professionally accommodate 30,000 [pilgrims], in a welcoming atmosphere, while also maintaining our normal services,” Włoszek said.

Under an agreement reached with the organizing committee of World Youth Days, the airport will also provide information, as well as assisting with training for volunteers and finding parking spaces for pilgrims.

The first charter planes for pilgrims arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the next ones due on Saturday.

Up to two million people are expected to take part in events organized across Poland as part of World Youth Days.

Kraków’s John Paul II Airport is the second largest in Poland, after Warsaw’s Chopin Airport. Last year it was used by just over 4.2 million people, and currently has direct links to 62 destinations.

The airport is named after the late Polish-born pope St John Paul II, who first initiated World Youth Day in the 1980s. (sl/pk)
