The head of the Catholic Church travelled by tram to the park. He was joined by disabled members of the public on the short trip.

Earlier, he was at the Archbishop’s residence in the heart of the city, where Pope Francis met with top members of the Polish church.

Crowds braved the rain on Thursday to attend the meeting in Błonie with the pontiff.

“Today we greet the rock of our times among the participants of World Youth Day,” said Poland's Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz.

On the vibrantly decorated stage in Błonie, the pilgrims displayed images of religious saints representing each continent. St. Vincent Paulo represented Europe, while Asian faithful raised a painting of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The saints were chosen by the attendees in an earlier internet poll.

On Friday, Pope Francis will visit the former Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi German death camp, where he will meet around 15 camp survivors. (rg)
