Volunteers started collecting donations on Wednesday at 8:00 am CET in the Polish capital, with a second collection point being set up at 7:30 pm in front of the St. John Archicathedral. Other cities around the country will be included as the programme unfolds.

The start of the collection coincides with one of the monthly anniversaries connected with the Smolensk crash.

The organisers have said that they want the two monuments to be inaugurated on the eighth anniversary of the crash, which happened on 10 April 2010.

Members of the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party have already indicated that the monuments will be erected on Krakowskie Przedmieście, a stretch of road in central Warsaw which includes the presidential palace.

The Polish president's plane crashed in western Russia in 2010 while it was preparing to land at Smolensk airport. All 96 people on board, including President Kaczyński and First Lady Maria Kaczyńska, died in the crash. (rg)
