The new circle is called European Democrats and was formed by Jacek Protasiewicz, Stanisław Huskowski and Michał Kamiński. They were joined by Stefan Niesiołowski, who left Civic Platform (PO) on Wednesday.

Niesiołowski said he made his decision because PO is engaged in "internal purges" instead of fighting the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Some say that this is a harbinger of further divisions in PO to come.

"I think this is the beginning of the end of PO, that people will leave for the Nowoczesna party and that Nowoczesna is the real leader of the opposition today, not PO," said PiS parliamentary club spokeswoman Beata Mazurek.

Kamiński, Huskowski and Protasiewicz were expelled from PO on July 20 for "harming" the party’s image. (mol/pk)
