The dismissal was announced by Prime Minister Beata Szydło at a press conference on Wednesday, following an statement last week that she would introduce “systemic and personnel changes” in her government.

Szydło said that Szałamacha had “done a great job” in preparing the 2017 budget, which was accepted by the government on Wednesday.

She added that Szałamacha had submitted his resignation, which she had accepted.

The fact that Morawiecki, a former banker, is taking over the finance ministry was the focus of a major part of the press conference on Wednesday.

Political commentators said that the announcement fell short of expectations. “The announcements related to a reconstruction pointed to larger changes in personnel,” Tomasz Czapiewski, a political scientist, told Polish Radio.

Morawiecki is also deputy Prime Minister of Poland. He quickly rose in the ranks of government after entering politics following the victory of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party in the October 2015 general election.

Czapiewski said: “The strengthening of the deputy prime minister is a signal for the president that another competitor is growing.” (rg)
