A presidential bill lowering the retirement age will be passed by the lower house of parliament within the next two weeks, a senior deputy from Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has said.

"We want the bill to be passed by the Sejm - the lower house of parliament - within the next two sittings, Beata Mazurek told private broadcaster Polsat News on Monday.

Polish President Andrzej Duda wants the retirement age to return to 65 for men and 60 for women, down from the 67 for both sexes introduced in 2012 by the former Civic Platform (PO) government.

Mazurek, who also chairs parliament's social policy and family committee, which is working on the bill, added: “In November the bill will certainly be adopted by the Sejm”.

The law also needs to be approved by the Senate, the upper house, where PiS holds a majority.

Lowering the age at which Poles retire was a key campaign pledge by Andrzej Duda and the Law and Justice (PiS) party, which swept into power in Poland's October general elections last year. (ał/pk)
