Recordings of a 2010 meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Tusk prove that an official Polish report was a direct copy of a “falsified” Russian report on the Smolensk presidential plane crash, Poland’s defence minister has said.

Tapes which have recently surfaced of a meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and then-Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk hours after the 2010 plane crash in Smolensk are “hugely” important, said Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz.

Macierewicz said that the recordings cast doubt on reports by the Russian Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) and Poland’s own investigation led by then-Interior Minister Jerzy Miller.

“I would say that this is the latest piece of evidence which shows that the whole of the Miller report was a direct copy of [the MAK report], which was in turn falsified so as to... hide [the truth] from the public,” Macierewicz told the public TVP broadcaster on Wednesday.

“This is the importance of these recordings, and it is huge because it paints a picture [of the final moments before the tragedy] which is a direct contradiction of the MAK report and that by Miller,” Macierewicz said.

Macierewicz added that he believes the recordings should be made public.

The governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which came to power last October, has launched a new commission to probe the crash, which happened as the Polish presidential plane was attempting to land at the Smolensk military airport.

All 96 people on board, including Polish President Lech Kaczyński, were killed in the disaster. (rg/pk)
