Thousands of Polish pilgrims from every diocese in Poland, representatives of the Polish diaspora abroad, and dozens of bishops, took part in a special general audience in Rome on the occasion of the Year of Charity.

Pope Francis thanked Poles for welcoming him during the World Youth Days which was held in Poland in July.

This year marks the anniversary of the Baptism of Poland in 966.

He told the Polish pilgrims: “Dear brothers and sisters, you have come here on a national pilgrimage to thank God for the baptism that your people took 1,050 years ago, as well as because of the good which was born in the hearts of young people from all over the world during [our] unforgettable meeting in Kraków”.

The Pope spend five days in Poland in July, visiting several landmarks around the country, including the Jasnagóra monastery as well as Auschwitz, the former Nazi-German concentration camp in southern Poland. (rg)
