The European Commission said that Poland took rapid and necessary steps after a discovery that eggs infected with salmonella had been exported to a number of EU countries.

A meeting with representatives of these countries was organised on Friday by the European Commission, which is responsible for overseeing the quality of food and feed.

Salmonella bacteria in eggs from Poland was first notified to the Commission by Dutch authorities. Polish PM Beata Szydło, in Brussels for the EU summit, said that Poland was monitoring the situation and reporting immediately on the actions undertaken.

The infected eggs have been withdrawn from the market. It's not known how many countries received the salmonella-infected eggs. Although early reports spoke of seven, this may be as many as ten.

Meanwhile the Polish Agriculture Ministry said that the eggs had been sent to Belgium, the Netherlands and Croatia. (ek/rg)
