This was the first time that the award, granted by associates of the city's Biały Kruk religious publishing house, was presented.

“It is a great privilege to be able to serve my homeland, an independent Poland,” Macierewicz said during the award ceremony at the Kraków Opera.

During a speech at the ceremony, Janusz Kawecki, a member of the National Council for Radio and Television, said that: “There is no freedom without truth. The fight for truth is service to the Fatherland. Antoni 'dared to be wise' from a young age.”

Macierewicz was a founder of the Workers' Defense Committee (KOR) in 1976, which was a precursor of the Solidarity trade union.

He has served as defence minister since late 2015. (rg)
