A clause in Poland's new Constitutional Tribunal Act, which determines the selection of the tribunal's head, was deemed constitutional on Monday by a majority of the court's judges.

Under the July act, three candidates, nominated by a General Assembly of the tribunal's judges, are put forward to the Polish president who then chooses a head and deputy.
Under an earlier law, the tribunal put up two judges for the president's selection.
Opposition MPs called the new clause into question after the constitutional court in August found several other clauses of the new law to be in breach of the constitution. (vb/pk)
