Russia should pay Poland PLN 7.8 million (EUR 1.79m) for the use of a building in Warsaw without a valid contract, a district court in the Polish capital ruled on Wednesday.

Warsaw City Hall and the Polish treasury claimed Russia did not have a contract to use the building in Warsaw’s Mokotów district from 2012 to 2015.

During the communist era, the building was used as accommodation for Soviet diplomats.

“The Russian Federation, which was aware of the date of the hearing, did not attend and did not take a stand in the case,” judge Jacek Tyszka said.

“Because [the Russians] did not take a stand, the court accepts the plaintiff’s claims to be true,” he said.

In October, the Warsaw authorities said City Hall was owed PLN 16 million by Russia for two other properties also used without a valid contract in the capital. (vb/pk)
