Polish democrats join forces, new political party born

The European Democrats Party (PED), a merger of the Democratic Party demokraci.pl and the European Democrats association, was announced as the new political grouping held its first congress in Poland on Saturday.

The new party's leader is Elżbieta Bińczycka.

Stefan Niesiołowski, one of the new party's MPs and a former member of the opposition Civic Platform, claimed that democracy in Poland is at risk and that the opposition needs to join forces to defend democratic values.

The new party has four seats in parliament. The government has yet to comment. (vb)
