“I have made the decision to allow a special pension for the wife and son of the late Łukasz Urban,” Szydło said, adding that “the family of the heroic driver will get it after Christmas”.

On Monday, a Tunisian man drove Urban's truck into a crowd at a Christmas fair in Berlin, killing 12 and injuring 50.

The suspect was on Friday shot dead in Milan in a shootout with police.

Urban's attempt to avoid the inevitable massacre by grabbing the steering wheel while he lay stabbed in the passenger seat, has attracted international attention for his brave deeds. (vb)
