In total, 46 people have died of hypothermia in Poland since 1 November last year, the PAP news agency reported.

The authorities have warned that homeless people may be in danger unless they find shelter.

In the southern mountain resort of Zakopane, the mercury plunged to minus 18 degrees Celsius on Friday morning. Forecasters said that on Saturday night temperatures there could reach minus 28 degrees.

Rescuers have warned of avalanches and advised hikers not venture into the higher parts of the southern Tatra mountains.

Meanwhile, Anna Adamkiewicz from the Government Security Centre, said about 1,300 people were still without electricity on Friday morning after heavy snowfall and winds downed power lines.

Some 18,000 households had been left without electricity at one point.
