In total, 53 people have died of hypothermia in Poland since 1 November last year, the PAP news agency reported.

The Government Security Centre has appealed to the public to inform the authorities if they see homeless people sleeping rough who could be at risk of hypothermia.

Poland has been hit by an Arctic chill in recent days.

The northeastern town of Suwałki on Saturday morning saw the mercury plunge to minus 27.2 degrees Celsius, probably the lowest temperature in Poland so far this winter, Polish Radio reported.

Forecasters said that on Saturday night temperatures in the southern mountain resort of Zakopane could reach minus 28 degrees Celsius.
