Kaczyński plans changes to Polish voting laws

A limit for mayors of two terms in office and see-through ballot boxes are among planned changes to electoral laws announced by the leader of Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The new rules are planned ahead of 2018 local government elections.
“We have to change the current, very defective, state of the electoral law and the whole organization of elections,” PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński told Polish broadcaster TVP on Sunday.
“I want every citizen to be able to see what is happening at a polling venue, including during the counting of votes,” he added.
Kaczyński said he wanted planned changes to be enforced “immediately,” adding that the new rules would “protect elections from any abuse”.
Two years ago, Kaczyński said November 2014 local government elections were “falsified”. He said that 17.8 percent of cast votes were invalid, which was an indication of foul play. (vb/pk)
