The National Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Thursday that investigators in Katowice, southern Poland, have been conducting a probe since Sunday into two money transfers to an account in Poland allegedly made by the main suspect in the Louvre attack.

According to the Le Figaro daily, following his arrival in France, the suspect -- identified as Abdullah Reda al-Hamahmy -- made two separate money transfers via Western Union to an account based in Poland.

The recipient of the money, who has been identified by police as also being an Egyptian national, was reported to have received a total of EUR 5,000 on 31 January and 1 February.

On Friday the 29-year-old Abdullah Reda al-Hamahmy allegedly brandished a machete and shouted “Allahu Akbar” at a shopping mall that is part of the Louvre complex. He injured a soldier on site and was shot several times.

French President Francois Hollande called the incident a terrorist attack. (rg/pk)
