The accident happened in Oświęcim, southern Poland, when a convoy of cars, including one carrying the prime minister, was forced off the road due to a smaller car swerving sharply only metres away.

The car carrying Szydło hit a tree causing the prime minister minor injuries.

She was treated at a local hospital, the government spokesman said, adding that “nothing serious happened to the prime minister”.

The incident is being investigated by local police.

This is not the first car accident involving top government officials in recent months.

Recently a car carrying Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz was involved in an eight-car pile-up, while a car carrying President Andrzej Duda skidded into a roadside ditch early last year. The latter accident was blamed on a failed tire. (rg)
