Offenders who falsify invoices related to goods or services worth more than PLN 10 million (USD 2.5 million, EUR 2.3 million) will face up to 25 years in prison.

If the amount exceeds PLN 5 million, the penalty will be from three to 15 years in prison.

The new law comes into force on 1 March.

The president’s website said VAT fraud "has become serious in nature, because of its ubiquity... and the diverse methods used by perpetrators."

Beefing up state coffers by cracking down on tax cheats was a prominent pledge by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which swept to power in parliamentary elections in late 2015.
