“While in the 1960s and 1970s the biggest polluters were industrial plants, currently 80 percent of pollutants are emitted by households, especially detached houses,” said Prof. Bolesław Samoliński from the Medical University of Warsaw during the seminar on Tuesday.

He added that a debate and intra-ministerial cooperation is required to find a solution to the problem.

Samoliński said that one way to help reduce the problem is to better insulate houses, install suitable heating systems and burn proper fuel.

Replacing all the unsuitable heating systems around the country would cost around PLN 150 billion, the expert added.

Many households in Poland, particularly in rural areas, still burn coal in indoor installations to heat living quarters.

In recent months air pollution in many parts of the country, including large cities such as Warsaw and Kraków, reached alarming levels. (rg/pk)
