Search continues after building collapse in Poland kills six

At the time of writing, several of the injured were still in hospital. Two children were among the fatalities.

Firefighters used specialised equipment overnight to look for other people who might still be under the rubble. Although all the residents have been accounted for, there are still some areas which needed searching.

Szydło visited the site on Saturday, saying that the search and rescue operation will continue until it is confirmed that there are no more people trapped under the building.

“The search is ongoing. We hope that nobody is still under the rubble, but rescuers said the operation will be carried out till the end,” Szydło said.

“It is always the case that until the area is cleared, we will not be sure that no one is left, so the rescuers will not leave the area.”

Szydło added that the children orphaned in the disaster would be receiving a special pension, while the government would be looking into the individual situation of each of the families and aid them accordingly.

In a statement, Polish President Andrzej Duda called the incident in the town of Świebodzice, south-western Poland, a “tragedy”.

He expressed his support to the families involved and thanked the rescue parties for their professionalism. (rg/di)
