The parliamentary club is to be headed by Nowoczesna deputy head and spokeswoman Katarzyna Lubnauer.

Ryszard Petru will remain party leader.

"Today, at my request, the Nowoczesna club decided to split the function of party leader and head of the parliamentary club," Petru told reporters in parliament.

Petru said he intends to focus on preparing for local elections expected to take place in autumn next year.

Nowoczesna was founded in late May 2015 by Petru, an economist, just a few months before Poland’s parliamentary elections that year.

His party won 7.6% of the vote, which resulted in Nowoczesna taking 28 seats in the 460-member lower house of parliament, a major success for a new grouping.

Nowoczesna has recently seen a drop in its approval ratings. Four of its MPs resigned earlier this month and defected to the rival Civic Platform (PO).
