30 killed in road crashes over long weekend in Poland

Thirty people died in 356 road accidents over the May long weekend in Poland, police have said.

The number of deaths from Friday to Wednesday was five less than a year ago, while there were 109 fewer road accidents.

Between Friday and Wednesday 1,571 drink drivers were detained on Polish roads, down from 1,745 last year.

Robert Opas, a spokesman for police headquarters, said on Thursday: “For this year's long weekend we have much better results than in previous years in terms of safety.”

He added: “In general traffic safety this year at the end of April improved, with about 10 percent fewer accidents and people killed than last year.”
