The annual event was organised by the Robert Schuman Foundation, named after one of the founding fathers of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSE), a forerunner of the EU.

The foundation's director Rafał Dymek said the march aimed to show “that there are people in Poland who want the EU, though not perfect, to be lasting, to get stronger, and for Poland to have an active role in it”.

Tuesday, 9 May, will mark exactly 67 years since Schuman, who was France's foreign minister at the time, announced a plan to create the ECSE. (vb)
