The highest number of customers - over 3,500 - were hit in the central Łódź region, said the Government Security Centre.

Firefighters said they were called out 730 times over 24 hours.

They added that the number of customers left without power had gone down to some 2,500 by Wednesday morning.

"Strong winds damaged several roofs on buildings in the Łódź province... fortunately no one was injured. The situation is stabilising ," said fire brigade spokesman Paweł Frątczak.
