President signs condolence book for Zbigniew Brzeziński

A condolence book has been opened in the Polish capital for Varsovians who wish to pay their respects to Zbigniew Brzeziński, who will be buried in Washington on Friday.

Polish President Andrzej Duda and US Ambassador to Poland Paul Jones were the first to sign the book, which will remain open for two days to the public before being handed over to Brzeziński's family.
"We will remember him as an effective politician, diplomat and advisor, a brilliant intellectual and a wonderful, wise and righteous man," Duda said.
In his entry, Jones said Brzeziński was a great and good man.
Brzeziński, a Polish-born advisor to US President Jimmy Carter, was an influential figure in Washington in recent decades.
Born in Warsaw in 1928, he studied in Canada and the US after World War II, and in 1977 joined Carter's administration.
Under Brzeziński's advice, the US spent billions of dollars supporting Afghan fighters during the Soviet-Afghan war of the 1980s.
He was also a strong advocate of Poland's NATO accession.
After leaving the White House, Brzeziński remained an influential figure in Washington.
In 1995 he was awarded Poland's highest state distinction, the Order of the White Eagle.
He died aged 89 on 26 May. (vb/pk)
