The authorities believe that the gang, which operated in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania, could have cost Polish taxpayers some PLN 40 million (EUR 9.5m, USD 10.7m), the IAR news agency reported.

The gang is suspected of selling fuel without paying taxes.

Nearly 300 police, customs and tax officers raided 29 sites across Poland early on Monday.

They seized 12 trucks with cisterns worth about PLN 3.6 million, 10 luxury cars, cash, gold jewellery, watches and other valuables.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 63, face up to 10 years in jail.
