A police chief in the city of Radom, central Poland, has been fired after clashes at rally by the anti-government Committee for the Defence of Democracy (KOD).

Trouble between supporters of KOD and the nationalistic All-Polish Youth organization broke out on Saturday at a rally commemorating the anniversary of June 1976 protests in Radom against Poland’s communist authorities of the time.

The Committee for the Defence of Democracy has accused the All-Polish Youth of attacking one of its members, while the nationalists claim they were defending a colleague attacked by a KOD member.

Police have detained three men suspected of attacking a KOD activist and are continuing a probe into the clashes, a regional police spokesman said.

Mariusz Błaszczak, Poland’s Interior Minister, said on Monday that there may not have been enough officers policing the rally. Radom police chief Piotr Kostkiewicz was fired after the clashes.

Błaszczak also said that he talked about the incidents with Poland’s national police’s chief, adding that “an audit [of the Radom police force] will be carried out” and that the case is being investigated by the prosecutor’s office.
