Wałęsa was taken to a hospital in Gdańsk, northern Poland, on Saturday because of circulation problems.

Earlier, he had been expected to take part in an anti-government protest in Warsaw on Monday.

Wałęsa was the leader of the Solidarity movement which conducted strikes and held protests which helped bring down the communist regime in Poland in 1989.

Several years ago, media reported that he had a pacemaker installed and that he was suffering coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
