The mercury on Monday could climb to 33 degrees Celsius in Poland's southeast and 30 degrees Celsius in the centre, where level-two heat warnings are in place.

The Government Security Centre said that people should drink lots of water and stay indoors and should avoid alcohol and physical activity during the heat wave.

The centre also said that swimming was only allowed in marked areas following five drownings on Saturday. (vb/pk)
