Poland’s Wałęsa denies informant claims amid probe

Former Polish President Lech Wałęsa on Wednesday reaffirmed his denial of allegations that he was a paid informer for the country's communist-era security services.

"I never collaborated with the communist services; I was never on the communist side," Wałęsa told broadcaster Polsat News when asked about a new probe launched by prosecutors from Poland’s government-affiliated Institute of National Remembrance (IPN).
The investigation, in progress since 29 June, concerns Wałęsa allegedly making false statements during sworn testimony about recently unearthed documents.
The IPN’s Andrzej Pozorski has told Polish Radio’s IAR news agency that the probe also concerns other testimonies by Wałęsa in which he denied collaborating with communist security services.
The IPN is a state-run research institute endowed with vetting and prosecutorial powers. (str)
